Tips Before Leaving on Vacation

Preparing your septic system for vacation ensures it stays healthy during inactivity and prevents back-ups upon your return. 

• Drain Pipes: Open all faucets and flush all toilets to empty the pipes.
• Water in Tubs/Sinks: leave 6 inches of water and pull the plug out right before you leave
• Coordinate: Ask a neighbor or friend to check on the property.

• Do Not Use Garbage Disposal: Avoid using it entirely, especially before a trip, as it increases solids.
• Fix Leaks: Repair any running toilets or dripping faucets at least a few weeks before leaving.
• Winter Considerations: If leaving in winter, ensure the tank is insulated (e.g., with mulch) to prevent freezing.
